What to Pack for Yourself as an Expecting Dad

When packing your hospital bag, focus on utility, comfort, and endurance. Labor can span anywhere from a few hours to over a full day, and hospital rooms are rarely designed for guest luxury. You are gearing up for a marathon, not a weekend getaway. Comfortable Clothing: Pack 2 sets of breathable, comfortable clothes. Opt for layers, as hospital room temperatures fluctuate wildly between freezing air conditioning and stifling delivery rooms. Include comfortable shoes or slip-ons for walking the hallways during long labor circuits. Toiletries & Personal Hygiene: Bring a toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, face wipes, and a small towel. Staying fresh helps maintain your energy during long hours and keeps you presentable when you are standing close to your partner. Snacks & Sustenance: Hospital cafeterias often close overnight, and you cannot be effective if you are running on empty. You are stepping into the role of the primary "Snack Donkey"—pack high-protein snacks, nuts, energy bars, and electrolyte drinks to keep your stamina stable. Electronics & Long Cables: Bring phone chargers with extra-long cords (2–3 metres), as hospital outlets are frequently located far from the seating areas or delivery bed. Consider a portable power bank so you never lose charge while managing family updates or taking those first photos. Pillow & Blanket: Hospital-provided bedding for support partners is notoriously thin, often resembling a paper towel. A familiar pillow (use a bright pillowcase so it doesn't blend into the hospital bedding) and a warm blanket make overnight stays on a fold-out couch significantly more restful. ---

When should dad pack his hospital bag?

Expecting dads should have their hospital bag packed and ready by week 35 or 36 of pregnancy. Labor can begin unexpectedly, and having your gear prepared near the front door or in the car trunk eliminates last-minute panic when contractions start.

What snacks are best for dad to bring to the hospital?

Focus on non-perishable, high-protein, and easy-to-eat options such as protein bars, trail mix, beef jerky, dried fruit, and electrolyte drink mixes. Avoid strong-smelling foods (like tuna or garlic) in the delivery room, as pregnancy heightened smell can easily trigger nausea.

Does dad really need to bring his own pillow?

Yes. Hospital recliners and cot beds provided for support partners are notoriously uncomfortable, and spare hospital pillows are often scarce. Bringing a familiar pillow with a distinct, non-white pillowcase ensures better rest during long overnight stays and prevents it from getting mixed up with hospital laundry. ---
